
Philip L. Ellis was b. ca. 1813 in Maine; m. Hannah, b. ca. 1816 in Maine.
Philip came with his wife and brother with the Maine Colony to Rockton in the summer of 1838. He had a claim on S 7 in Roscoe. In the early days, hauling wheat to Chicago was the only way to get many of the necessities of life. Mr. Ellis told about taking his first load o wheat to Chicago. He had been forced to go barefoot all summer because he did not have the means to buy a pair of shoes and expected to be able to secure some much needed footwear while in Chicago. However, he received barely enough money for his load of wheat to pay his expenses. Since the weather had turned cold, he had to come home with grain sacks wrapped around his cold feet.
