1. Joshua III5 Wetherell (Joshua II4, Joshua I3, Samuel2, William1) was born April 28, 1744 in Dudley, Massachusetts, and died July 25, 1795 in Dudley, Massachusetts. He married Hannah Williams April 17, 1766 in Sutton, Massachusetts. She was born January 26, 1743/44 in Stoughton, Massachusetts, and died March 27, 1835 in Dudley, Massachusetts.

He was called Joshua Jr. in the town records and been hog rieve in 1771 according to Dudley city records. He resided in the 1790 census next to his father and his widow still maintained a separate residence in 1800. By 1810 she no longer maintained a separate residence in the census. His father was the administrator of his estate.

This Joshua is the most likely to be the Joshua Weitherell who was a private in Capt. Nathaniel Healy's Co, Col Jonathan Holoman's Regt.; Service 16 day; company marched to Rhode Island on an alarm in Dec 1776 and was stationed at Providence Jan 21, 1777. Nathaniel Healy's company was raised in the Dudley area only; Source MASS SOLDIERS AND SAILORS IN THE WAR OF THE REVOLUTION, (more from other sources) His father Joshua II would have been in his 60's, his son was only 2. He is not a very visible person being mentioned once in the town records and dying before his father.

Witherell & Witherell add a Polly between Able and Hannah. A Polly appears in the HISTORY OF OXFORD, by Daniels. Evidently Witherell & Witherell placed her here because of her age. She married Edward Lamb in Oxford, then moved to Montpelier, VT. Vital Records of VT indicate she was #301 in Witherell & Witherell's family, d/o Elijah and Mehetable Wetherell of Norton, MA. Her brother, #300 also resided and died in VT according to Witherell & Witherell. There are several Wetherell families that lived in Oxford, Dudley and Woodstock, CT, and you have to be very careful in sorting out who belongs to which family. Joshua III's children s birth dates come from Edward's Bible, Dudley Vital Records show mostly just the baptism dates. According to the bible records and the age on Hannah's tombstone, she was older than her brother Joshua IV.

11 i. William L. (Larabee?)7 Wetherell, born Abt. 1799 in Connecticut; died Aft. August 8, 1867 in Pomfret, Connecticut. He married Mary McFarland Bef. 1817; born 1799 in Oxford (Dudley), Massachusetts; died in Danielsonville, Connecticut.

Notes for William L. (Larabee?) Wetherell:

His name is derived from Pomfret Vital Records and census records. Marshal and Adeline have been listed elsewhere as the children of William L.'s father, however their birth dates fit in better as children of William L. Wetherell & Marshal's death record indicates that William L. Wetherell is his father. Some of this may be just speculation because it was unusual although not unknown for a family to have only one child.

He wrote his will Aug 8, 1867 and died before Apr 10, 1872 when it was probated leaving everything to his wife. His executor was Benjamin Brown of Brooklyn, who may have been his cousin. (Pomfret, CT probate records, Vol 22, pp 56-7, 84, 87 & 75. He left 40 acres of land and two houses with a value of $1300, and the estate was inventoried as $1528, with expense due Hiram of $63. In 1880 Census, Mary was living in Killingly in the household of Hiram. She had sold all the property in Pomfret by 1878. He was described as a farmer and carpenter.

William L. and Mary are on most official records. On Ellen's death certificate from Spokane, WA, Ellen's daughter, Nellie M. Cook, listed her grandmother as Anna McFarlan of VT and father William Wetherell of VT. HISTORY OF OXFORD by Daniels lists a Polly McFarland of Oxford, marrying a Larabee Wetherell of Pomfret. William Brown, s/o Dinah (Wetherell) Brown sued the town of Oxford in 1806 for the support of Polly d/o Josiah M. McFarland and niece of his wife and gained the suit. The town appealed to the S.J. court and gained the case. Edward's bible records say Polly married William Wetherell of Pomfret, and that these were the parents of Ellen who married their son, John Otis Wetherell. John Otis Wetherell and Ellen Wetherell's marriage license of 1861 in WI says that her parents were William L. and Mary was born in MA. There were Larabees in Plainfield where Huldah, William L.'s mother was born and in the late 1700's a common practice was to give a son a middle name which was the mother's maiden name. So if this is true, then Mary is also Polly, or Anna, and William L. is William Larabee, but this is speculation.

Source used for Samuel & Abigail's children is Edward's Bible. There are some questions because the bible says Harriet Sophrone was his wife, so either Samuel had two wives, or his children have been confused, and I've been unable to locate the family at all except for a Sturbridge reference that recorded their marriage.

Purchased land from the Holland Land Co in Oct 1825, this is what is now known as the town of Cherry Creek, & he was elected in 1854 in the Town of Kiantone, overseer of the poor, found in Andrew Young's History of Chautauqua Co.

This appears to be the same family especially since Willard shows up on the 1865 census of New York.

I am now including these families in my tree based on this information if nothing else changes in the future.

Witherell & Witherell say that William and Edward, Joshua's brothers, were his heirs, however William & Edward filed suit against the executrix of the estate, his widow to obtain their share of their father and grandfather's estates which Joshua had been administrating, so I don't believe they were heirs of Joshua IV.

William & Edward also filed in regards to the portion belonging to their aunt Dinah and her heirs who resided in Woodstock, CT and Rhode Island.

Joshua Wetherell Adm Bond allowed 7 Dec 1802 signed Josh Wetherell, Thomas Learned, and Ebenezer Foster Widow requested Josh IV since there were no living male heirs of Josh II. Josh IV was to relieve her old age. Her mark Apr 5, 1802

He was 84 when he died, she was 90. He was on the board in Apr 1867 to create the town system. He bought land in Oxford in 1815 upon which he built a house. It was H-68. (location is from Daniel's HISTORY OF OXFORD, H68 Lyman Wetherell "L. Wetherell" on map, sold to him by Larned Hayward 93 rods of land and a house, Wetherell built the present house in 1834 and d. there, presently belongs to Lymon, his son.

9. John6 Wetherell (Joshua III5, Joshua II4, Joshua I3, Samuel2, William1) was born August 26, 1786 in Dudley, Massachusetts, and died March 1, 1871 in Oxford, Massachusetts. He married (1) Clarissa Sigourney March 24, 1816 in Oxford, Massachusetts, daughter of Andrew Sigourney and Elizabeth Wolcott. She was born August 18, 1791 in Oxford, Massachusetts, and died November 12, 1859 in Oxford, Massachusetts. He married (2) Mary Johnson July 19, 1864 in Oxford, Massachusetts, daughter of Nathaniel Johnson.

Notes for John Wetherell

He came to Oxford, spring of 1813 as clerk (with his brother Edward) for Abijah Davis and was his successor in trade. In partnership with Richard Moore in 1815. In 1817 Moore moved on and John remained there until 1835, and became wealthy. He was president of the Oxford Bank July 31, 1848 until Oct 1849,. In Jan 1825 the Second Social Library was formed and John was in charge from 1831 for three years. John built a house in 1834, used by 1890 in Daniel's history as the episcopal parsonage. He resided in H220, H221, (late of Benj Paine (father of the wife of Andrew S. Wetherell) Mar 29, 1815, Abijah Davis to John Wetherell & Richard Moore, Lot; House built the same year, 1816, Richard Moore to John Wetherell, 1/2 House and Lot; a year or two later Wetherell built a store south of his house, where he engaged in trade; Apr 1, 1835, John Wetherell to Loring Davis, who fitted up the store as a dwelling, Mar 11, 1843, the heirs of Loring Davis to Benj Paine, the whole, Mar 27, 1843, from Daniels', HISTORY OF OXFORD) and H224. He bought a pew in the Congregational Church for $150 and is buried in the 2nd grave site to the left as you enter the church cemetery. He is on the petition of Dec 4, 1825 to institute a 2nd Masonic Lodge. That lodge died about 1831, and he helped organize the 3rd Masonic Lodge of Oxford Sep 23, 1859, and was the first chaplain. He was selectman in 1822 & 1823. He was licensed to sell liquor in his store from 1818 to 1835. He sold land in Webster, Jan 4, 1824; 10 acres for $200 to Slater & Howard to form a new plant.

Witherell & Witherell add a Harriet to John's family. She does not belong since she is the Harriet Esten that marries Calvin Wetherell (#828 on their list) Daniels says, Harriet m.n. (maiden name) Esten, widow age 46, d. 8 Sep 1868 in Oxford.

He was a partner in the firm of Seth Daniels & Co., Shoe manufacturer in Oxford before 1840 continuing for 5 years. (In 1844 Daniel Stevens was also a partner {relative of his second wife ?} and his father-in-law was involved in shoe manufacturing, removed to Woonsocket, RI where he practiced medicine. At the time of his second marriage he was a shoemaker and resident of Oxford, by the time of the birth of his 3rd child he was in Woodstock, CT. On Jan 16, 1846 as a resident of Killingly, CT., he sold to John, his father, leather cutting machinery. He is also called by some botanist, removed to Blackstone, MA, a suburb of Woonsocket, RI. He sold land deeded to him Sep 7, 1861 from his father John to Joseph Storm of Barrieville, RI, May 7, 1864. When his daughter was born in Woodstock, he was listed as a shoemaker, and when m. in Webster, he listed his occupation as shoe manufacturer. (Edward Wetherell's bible calls him a doctor) His tombstone, part of his father's, says Andrew Sigourney Wetherell MD. "He giveth his beloved sleep." at Oxford Plains Cemetery.

Witherell & Witherell give Andrew 8 more children, but the will of George, one of those children, names their father as Caleb L. Wetherell

He graduated 1844 at Yale University, and studied Law at Cambridge, studied for a few months at the offices of Bacon and Bacon where he was admitted to the bar in Autumn of 1846. He began his practice Jan 1847 at Worcester, MA, was a member of Gov. Andrew's staff in 1861, was representative for Worcester, and filled positions of trust.

In 1846 he appears at court and legally changes his name from John Wetherell jun of Oxford, to John Wolcott Wetherell. (List of Persons whose Names Have Been Changed in Massachusetts 1780-1892. collated and published by the secretary of the Commonwealth in 1893. Genealogical Publishing Co. Reprint 1972.

In Genealogical & Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Vol II, page 132, he is listed as being a member of Gov. Andrew's staff when they reviewed the 25th Massachusetts, 30 Oct 1861. He was a Colonel and was with a Colonel Ritchie & Gov. Andrews at Camp Lincoln.

Graduated from Yale in 1848, and studied Law at Cambridge with his brother. Admitted to the bar in 1851, and practiced in partnership with John W. Wetherell until he died. He is buried alongside his father in Oxford.

10. Edward6 Wetherell (Joshua III5, Joshua II4, Joshua I3, Samuel2, William1) was born October 18, 1789 in Dudley, Massachusetts, and died October 21, 1867 in Martin County, Minnesota. He married Betsey Moffitt October 24, 1814 in Oxford, Massachusetts, daughter of Lemuel Moffitt and Lucy Amidown. She was born May 12, 1793 in Oxford, Massachusetts, and died March 19, 1863 in Magnolia, Wisconsin.

On March 23, 1811 he, a resident of Dudley, and his brother. William, a resident of Pomfret, with the Heirs of Dinah Brown of Gloucester RI (their Aunt) requested the the estate of Joshua IV be divided. (Joshua IV had been the administrator of the estate of Joshua II who was the administrator of the estate of Joshua III when he died.)(To the Honbl Nath Paine, esq, Judge of probate of wills for the county of Worcester, MA. Edward of Dudley, William of Pomfret heirs of Josh late of Dudley, deceased they hold in common with heirs of Dudley and the heirs of Dinah Brown late of Gloucester, RI, asking for a division of the estate. 23 Mar 1811 dated)

Between 1810-1813 Edward appears to have attended Woodstock Academy in Woodstock, CT, by 1813 he was a clerk with his brother John in Oxford, MA residing sometime during this time frame at H76 in Oxford, removed to Pomfret, CT by 1820, where he resided next to this brother William, by 1830 he was back in Dudley, MA, in 1831 he moved to Kendal, Orleans Cty, NY, in !842 he moved the family to WI where he resided in Hustiford in 1850 & 1860 census. He apparently was in Magnolia with his son Edward Nelson Wetherell since Betsey died there and John his youngest was married there. He then apparently moved to MN where John Otis Wetherell, his youngest child resided, and where his brother-in-law had moved. He died there. (According to Edward's Bible he and Betsey were baptized Baptist Mar 28, 1813 with some children, probably not their own.)

Some Speculation of Edward's movements and why??

Edward was the youngest of Seven Children. To Examine the situation, when his father died, Edward was 6, John was 9, Lyman was 14, and Joshua IV was 19. The older brothers William and Samuel were probably not around or their Grandfather, Joshua II, would not have become the Administrator of Joshua III's estate. (William b. land in Pomfret, CT in 1797, Samuel was married in Sturbridge in 1794.) So these younger children were under the care of their mother (Hannah maintained a separate residence in 1800 census) and administration of their grandfather. Their sister Hannah got married in 1797 to a Corbin. This situation apparently continued until the death of Joshua II in 1802. On Apr 5, 1802, Mary, widow of Joshua II nominated Joshua IV to be the administrator of Joshua II's estate, (She requested Joshua IV since there were no living male Heirs of Joshua II to relieve her old age) thereby giving Joshua IV, by default control of Joshua III's estate if it had not been settled. Joshua IV filed administrative bond for the estate on Dec 7, 1802. John, at his own request has Jesse Wood of Oxford appointed his guardian Apr 19, 1804, Lyman was 19, on his own, and Edward doesn't appear until he is on the records of Woodstock Academy in Woodstock, CT (It appears that he went to live with his older brother and family in Woodstock, CT) Joshua IV died in 1810 and his widow Sally, Jepthah Baron and Eliphaz Perry post a bond of $10,000 to be administrators of Joshua IV's estate (Edward witnesses this) and if they weren't settled yet, by default Joshua III and Joshua II's estates. To further this speculation, William and Edward filed a request for a division of the estate against Sally on Mar 11, 1811 for their shares and the shares of the heirs of Dinah (Wetherell) Brown of Gloucester, which indicates that the earlier estates weren't settled completely yet. John remained in Oxford, as did Lymon. In fact Laura, Lymon's daughter was to be married in Dudley, possibly at her grandmother's since a widow Wetherell died there in 1835. William remains in Pomfret, Samuel disappears except for a death place somewhere in PA. Edward becomes the fiddle footed one, living first at Oxford, then Pomfret, then Dudley, then moving to Kendal, NY near his nephew, Darius. Edward's brother-in-law, Orrin Moffit, moved to NY also. Edward's son, Edward Nelson Wetherell, married Emily Mercy Reed in OH (she was a former resident of Kendal, NY), and about the same time Orrin Moffitt had a second marriage of another of the Reeds (Mercy S. Reed) near Cincinnati, OH. In about 1842, Edward's son, Edward Nelson Wetherell followed the Reeds and his older brother Amasa west to WI. (the Reeds went by wagon, the Wetherells with a new baby went by Steamer from NY to WI) Orrin Moffit also moved to WI about this time. Edward then moved as did their daughter Betsey and her family. Edward remained there farming until Betsey died in 1863, then he apparently moved on to be with his son John Otis Wetherell and family in MN. Orrin Moffitt went to MN also. Edward died in MN in 1867. Edward's other sons also left WI, Edward Nelson moving to MO & KS. Amasa moved in 1840 to Peoria IL, until 1860 when he moved after that to AR.

HISTORY OF OXFORD places Edward in H76 in Oxford, MA

NEW ENGLAND FAMILIES GENEALOGICAL AND MEMORIAL: VOLUME IV page 1842 & 1843 discuss the interrelationships of the families, with many mistakes. They followed the Potter genealogy and found only one Edward in Massachusetts at this time, and they put Susan Wellington as this Edward's third wife. They also listed Dinah Brown Edward's aunt as his first wife. Another area of confusion was that they used HISTORY OF OXFORD confusion to further cloud the issue... This Edward was descended from the youngest son of Samuel, Joshua who moved to Salem, whereby the Potter genealogy and NEW ENGLAND FAMILIES have then as being descended from youngest son of John, Joshua, also born in 1683, however, that Joshua died in Salem, MA. without issue.

Witherell & Witherell have Edward marrying Dinah Brown in 1811, however she was his Aunt & even Frank Wetherell of FAMILIES OF THE VILLAGE WETHERAL discounted this idea in his 1949 supplement.

Notes for Betsey Moffitt:

Monument to her is erected in Carthage, MO Bible records of Edward state that Betsey died in Magnolia, WI, Massachusetts has no record of her death, and Magnolia is where her son lived within sight of his in-laws.

This is a quote about a baptism, "Lamba & Nancy Joy children of Edward and Betsey were immersed @ Salters First established factory in Dudley, by Elder John B. Ballard, Paster of Dudley Baptist Church." This creates confusion about Betsey's children, but if, it is them, then one conclusion holds true, Edward and Betsey were Baptist and this would be one of the reasons they are so hard to track in New England.

Notes for Amasa S. Wetherell:

His first wife's brother spelled the name Whittemore and it is presumed that they were married in Wisconsin. His second marriage lists Hannah as miss and him as Amasa Weitherill. Hannah and Amasa signed an affidavit for Theodore, August 1, 1889 at Ozark, Franklin Co., Arkansas. The affidavit was in regards to a pension for Theodore. In 1852, Hannah was a member of the 1st Congregational Church of Peoria, then she changed her membership to Mrs. Hannah Wetherell. He was in WI in 1840, IL in 1850, and Arkansas 20 years by 1890.

In the 1948 book FAMILIES FROM THE VILLAGE WETHERAL by Frank Wetherell there are two girls listed between Theodore and Betsy, however the girl's names are the same as the names of the daughters of Theodore. Nowhere else in census records etc. do I find this but it is continued in Witherell & Witherell's THE WITHERELL, WETHERELL, WITHERILL FAMILIES OF NEW ENGLAND. An old photo-copy, in my possession, of the 1948 book has a handwritten notation that the girls were children of Theodore, note added in the 1950's.

He is on the tax rolls for 1879 with property, and proves a homestead for 160 acres in 1889.

He is on the 1880 census with wife, sons Lorenzo D., Andrew J., & Charles H., he also has a servant Mary J. Lively. He reappears on the 1900 census.

The story of the travels of the Wetherell's can be found in a soliloquy written by Elisha Rice Reed for the Historical Society of Magnolia about early travels to Wisconsin. Further Evidence from Orleans County, NY identifies a Mr. Wetherell who joined the 1st Christian Church of Barre (now Albion) in 1820. This would be too early to be the Edward's. Daniel Reed helped to found the first Baptist Church of Medina. He died in Murray. He was also involved in the 1st Baptist Church of Holley, formed Nov 12, 1825, with Elisha Rice, another prominent name in Orleans County. There was a Samuel Wetherbee who owned 76 acres on June 20, 1836 in Orleans, County. Daniel Reed was a prominent early settler of Orleans County, NY.

Edward is buried at Park Cemetery, Carthage, MO as is Emily his ex-wife.

The family moved with their father in his travels, eventually arriving in Kendal, New York. In 1840 census Edward Nelson and his family were living with his father there. Elisha Rice Reed, Emily's brother places Edward Nelson Wetherell's move to 1844 by steamer from New York to Wisconsin. Elisha names Edward Nelson a mason (stone worker) and a mason's tools were in his probate records. With the multiple places of birth of his children it is obvious that he was moving around alot during his time in WI. In 1860 census report he is described as a farmer. George's, his son, diary indicates that he was looking south in 1862/3 and by 1866 the family had moved to Seneca, MO via Ray County, MO. They don't appear in the 1870 census, but land records indicate that he proved a homestead in 1872. He joined the Masonic Lodge of Racine in 1876, and Emily moved to Carthage, MO approximately 1877. Emily was in Carthage in 1880 census. They were divorced in Newton Co, MO. Emily's funeral was held at the home of her son JE Wetherell, by the Rev. David King, the Baptist missionary. She had been a member of WCTU (pallbearers were DJ Bliss, S. Bistline, EB Soper, Thomas Waldron, SP Glass, and George Cassavan.

Edward's estate was probated Spring term 1893. His executor was George, his son. His personal property amounted to $374.90. There is a deed to his homestead. He was the architect and builder of Zellenken Brewery in Baxter Springs, KS and in his obit in the Baxter Springs News, Apr 2, 1892, it says he was called one of the 1st settlers of Baxter Springs, and a funeral was held there. He was the injured party in the divorce.

35 iii. Betsey Maranda Wetherell, born May 10, 1818 in Oxford, Massachusetts; died December 22, 1881 in New London, Wisconsin. She married Samuel J. Willet April 29, 1841 in Rochester, New York; born Abt. 1811.

Detailed information about Betsey's family came from the records of pension filed for Edward E. Willet's parents. Marriage date of Apr 29, 1841 is confirmed by three Rochester, NY papers, Daily Democrat, Daily Advertiser, and Gem & Ladies Amulet, married by Rev Mr. Boatman.

Maranda B. was how she styled herself of Edward Willet's pension papers, and she named all her living children.

36 iv. John Otis Wetherell, born December 7, 1830 in Dudley, Massachusetts; died March 17, 1893 in Canemah (Oregon City), Oregon. He married Ellen (Nellie) Medelia Wetherell December 31, 1861 in Plymouth, Wisconsin; born March 2, 1837 in Pomfret, Connecticut; died July 19, 1922 in Spokane, Spokane, Washington.

Notes for John Otis Wetherell:

According to his obit, he was born in Dudley, but not recorded. He is buried at the former Masonic Cemetery (now known as Mountain View) at Oregon City, Oregon. He enlisted in the Civil war, (calling himself a joiner (carpenter), at his death he said he was a mason.) Jan 16, 1865 at Mankato, MN as a private in Co F, 1st Regt Minn Vol Heavy Arty He was mustered Feb 13, 1865 at St. Paul, MN and was discharged Sep 27, 1865. He had been promoted to SGT, and then commissioned as a 2nd Lt., by the governor of MN, July 15, 1865 because of bravery. Wehn he died he was treasurer of Clackamus County, OR and his obit said he had moved with Edward, his father, from MA to NY to WI. He then moved to Martin County, MN and acted as a frontier scout, during the Indian depredations of 1862/3 until he enlisted in the regular army. When he was discharged he returned to MN where his 2nd child was born, then moved on to MO & KS where he held offices of trust. He was one of the organizers of the Seneca Masonic Lodge in 1874. He was in Neosho in 1880 buying and selling land. In Oct of 1885 he moved to Oregon City, OR, then moved temporarily to Eugene, returning to Oregon City in 1889. In 1892 he was elected treasurer of Clackamus County. He was a member of Multnomah Lodge #1 AF & AM, and Meade GAR Post no. 2. The family moved to Portland around 1894 then on to Wenatchee in 1906. Ellen filed in Spokane for benefits as a Civil War Veteran Widow Oct 2, 1916. She resided E 819 33rd Ave, Spokane.

Some dates work out to March 1836 for her birth date, but that is only 5 months after the date of her brother Hiram, so 1837 works out best.
