LYDIA POTTS

Lydia Potts was the daughter of Jonathan Potts and Elizabeth English. She was born on September 28, 1807 in Jefferson County, Ohio and died June 2, 1892 at Spring Hill, Henry County, IL. A local history says that she married first to Thomas Rowland who must have died before 1824. However, I wonder if that should have been Thomas "Bolen" and her second husband. There is a Thomas Rowland who was born in Ohio in 1802. She married John Cain on November 25, 1824 in Jefferson, OH. They had the following children, probably all in Jefferson, OH:

Jacob Cain born January 24, 1828 in OH m. Nancy Reed 24 JAN 1828 , Columbiana, Ohio

Elisabeth Cain born 1832 in OH.

Samuel Cain born 1833 in OH.

Joshua Cain born 1835 in OH.

Mary Ann Cain born 1837 in WA. (The 1850 Federal Census for Henry County says that she was born in Ohio)

Mr. Cain died and Lydia took her second cousin, Thomas Bolen, our ancestor as her third? husband. Cousin and multiple marriages were not uncommon in those days. One simply needed to have a partner during those harsh times, particularly with children. Lydia was Thomas Bolen's second wife. See Bolen page. Lydia and Thomas had the following children:

Washington R. Bolen born December 29, 1845 in Sharon, Henry County, Illinois

Lydia J. Bolen born May 2, 1848 in Sharon, married January 1, 1866 to Elias Clifton at Morrison, Whiteside County, IL and died December 8, 1899. Lydia is our ancestress through her second marriage to Fayette Martin.

Nancy Bolen born August 28, 1850 at Sharon, married Edward Somers on May 5, 1867 in Loraine, Henry County, IL.
