The above information has been recently updated due to a luncheon in Rockford, Illinois with my Layng cousins in 2000. Marilyn Dreger had gone to a lot of trouble to put together the Layng history along with this excellent luncheon. I owe her a ton of thanks, especially for the pictures of Mary McCann, Robert Layng, and a younger William Faulkner and Annie Layng. If you are a Layng cousin, or are looking for information on the family, please contact : Marilyn

Note: I have more information on the later descendants of the Layngs but have chosen not to list too much information about anyone who might still be living so as to protect their privacy.

Query:

My great, great grandfather was Dr. Edward Layng born, I believe, in or near Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland in 1813.? His parents were George (d. 1853 in Dromore, County Sligo; was living with a family named Beatty at the time and one of his grandsons had the middle name Beatty so there must have been some relation -- perhaps Beatty was a son-in-law) and his wife Elizabeth Layng who are buried in Ballina. George Layng's parents, I think, were John Layng and Margery Boyle.? Dr. Ed Layng had a brother named William who emigrated to Canada in the 1830's.? They had brothers named George and John. George and Edward emigrated to Massachusetts I think in the mid-late-1840s and settled in Worcester. I don't know what happened to John. Edward studied medicine in London, then returned to Ballina to practice for awhile before moving to Boston and Worcester, MA in about 1850 and died there in 1855.? His wife was Mary Josephine Montague.? Edward and Mary had children William Henry (1841-1911), Elizabeth (1851-?); married James McCurdy in Worcestor), George and Charles Beatty Layng (?-1854). William Henry Layng, who was born in County Mayo, presumably in Ballina, married Frances Gardiner in Massachusetts -- Frances was the daughter of John Gardiner of Ballinahaglish, County Mayo.

I have conducted extensive research on my "Dr. Ed" and have been very lucky to have his personal diary from his London days as well as several letters written to and from family in Ireland in the mid-1850s and later.? One finding was that Dr. Ed had a relative also named Edward Layng, and also a physician, who studied in London and practiced medicine in the Margate, England area -- I suspect that Dr. Ed 2 was an uncle of my Dr. Ed.? I have visited County Mayo and know the churchyard (Anglican/Church of Ireland) where Dr. Ed's parents are burried but could find no stone and as you probably know, the church records were consolidated in Dublin and were subsequently destroyed in a fire.? There were numerous Layngs living in County Mayo, the earliest Layng there that I have found held land in 1641.? I am reasonably certain that the County Mayo Layngs came originally from Scotland because Layng is a Scottish name, not Irish.? My research at the Royal College of Surgeons in London (I have Dr. Ed's membership certificate) indicated 3 or 4 other Layng physicians registered there, all from Scotland.

Hope somebody can help to refine and expand the foregoing!

John Hastings
