Justus Maricle was born in Vestal, Broome County, New York on January 25, 1842. Justus moved to Stevens County, Illinois with his parents in 1855. In 1861 he migrated to Winneshiek County, Iowa. He enlisted in Co. H., 9th Iowa Vol. Inf., on the 15th day of September of that year. He was wounded at the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, March 6, 1862. Having served almost four years he was mustered out of the service January 1, 1864 and then re-enlisted as a veteran and served to the close of the war. His service was mostly in the famous 15th Corps, with which he marched with Sherman from Atlanta to the sea. His rank was Corporal. He was a Presbyterian and doesn't appear to have belonged to any organizations such as the G.A.R.
On January 7, 1870 he was married to Lavinia M. Coy at Castle, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She was born January 25, 1855 in Iowa, her parents being Henry Coy and Sevilia Hazel Coy. Lavinia and Justus migrated to Browns Valley in 1871 and were among the first settlers there. Justus died July 16, 1921 and Lavinia died October 10, 1933 in Browns Valley. Lavinia had been a resident of Browns Valley for about 60 years. They had a home on the east side of Traverse Lake and then a home just north of the tracks in Browns Valley. They are buried at Valley View Cemetery in Browns Valley. In Lavinia's obituary it says that they came to Roberts County and the Old Agency. Probably Traverse County was annexed from Roberts county and note should be made of this as records may be available at Roberts County that have not been found at Traverse County.
They were the parents of two children: William Henry Maricle born in 1870 who died very young, and James Wales Maricle.
