"During the struggle for independence some of this family
took an active part, and were raised to the rank of officers in
the American army. They all lived to see their country free and
independent, the forest where the red man so long had roamed vanish
before the axe of the white settler, and peace and prosperity
perched on those banners so lately stained with patriot blood."[8]
John Olin II's son Gideon was probably one of the first to relocate
in Vermont. "He became a military man, holding a Major's
commission; during the war was one of the Councilors of the State,
from 1793 to 1796. He also represented Shaftsbury (Vermont) in
the General Assembly in 1778, and served for fifteen years; was
Speaker of the House through seven sessions of the Legislature.
Was assistant judge of the Bennington (Vermont) court for 1781,
and onward for twen ty years in succession, with the exception
of '98 an '99. Was Chief Justice 1807-10, was Representative in
Congress from 1793-1797, being two terms. His son, Abram B., next
to the youngest, held a very responsible position under President
Lincoln having been appointed Judge of the Supreme Court in Washington
City, which he held until his death, in 1879."[9]
