Henry W. Olin II was born January 2, 1803 in Shaftsbury, VT to John
Olin III and Sarah Card. He died September 26, 1877 in Austin Twsp, Mecosta Cty, MI.[1
] He married
Lydia Corey in 1825[2
] in Cattaraugus, Allegheny Cty, NY. Lydia was born in 1811[3 ] and died May
27, 1864 in Austin Twsp, Mecosta Cty, MI of small pox. The family migrated
from Vermont to New York where all of their children were born. Henry W. Olin
is listed in the 1830 NY Census for Geneseo Cty, Orangeville. This would be
around the time that Sally was born. Willard Olin's letter which is printed
later in this history says that there were 16 children altogether, but he only
knew 7-4 boys and 3 girls as the rest were before his time. The Olin cemetery
in Austin township holds many children's grave, a sad testament to the dangerous
diseases that children succumbed to in those days. Just recently it has been
discovered through the 1870 Michigan State Census that Henry remarried a woman
named Louisa. Since her age at that time is given as 60, she would have been
54 yrs old or more at the time of Lydia's death, I am assuming that she would
have been too old to have children. This does not mean that she didn't have
children from a previous marriage.
Descendants of Henry W. Olin and
Lydia CorryHenry W. Olin and Lydia Corry had moved with their family from Chemung, NY to Stanwood, Mecosta Cty, MI about the year 1860 or 1861. According to the 1879 Mecosta County Plat Book, page 29 Austin Township, Henry Olin owned 160 acres. Eighty of those acres are south of the highway and the other 80 are north. Also, Jas. Mansel owns 80 acres north of Henry. Giles Olin has 120 acres bordering his fathers. John Olin has 80 acres bordering Giles' and also containing the Olin Family Cemetery. Sisters Susan Potter (40 acres) and Mrs. S.M. Taylor(145) (80 acres) border John's land. Just above Sally Taylor's land is another 40 acres plot marked simply Taylor. The Olin name is also shown as Olen. Also on page 58 where patrons are listed, R.B. Van Auken and his son Eugene Van Auken are listed as farmers from NY who settled in 1865 in Sec. 32 of Stanwood. On page 39, Mecosta township I show J. Burgess, McCabe, Barton, Van Aukin, and De Gear. These names will become more significant as the history progresses. Their children William, Sally, Hannah, Phebe, Giles, John, Henry, Tom, Isaac and Susan were all born in NY. To learn more about their descendants, click on their name. The picture at right is me visiting the Austin Township Cemetery (also called the Olin cemetery) in Mecosta County, Michigan. It was a real thrill to have the opportunity to see the headstones of my 3rd g-grandparents and some of their children.
Henry and Lydia were buried in the family cemetery along with many other Olins.
No names were provided with this photo, only Tom was marked. However, I believe the order is something like this: Standing L to R is John C., Tom B., Sally, Sitting L to R is Hannah, Giles, Susan and Henry. A descendant of Hannah Van Auken stepped forward with another photo of her and we believe that she is seated on the left. Click on her name below to see that picture. A Potter descendant believes that the woman seated on the right is his ancestress, Susan B. Potter. John C. Olin was identified by one of his descendants as standing on the left.

Footnotes:
[1] Merton Olin, grandson of Thomas B. Olin, believed that Henry's middle name was Franklin and that he was born in 1809 in NY and died there in 1874. According to his tombstone he was 71y, 8m, 26d on April 21, 1877 when he died, that makes him 74 years old.
[2] Per Stella Vanauken's entry in the DAR it shows 1825 as their year of marriage.
[3] The marriage date of 1825 as well as the birth year and spelling for Lydia Corey were all taken from Stella Vanauken's DAR registration, Vol. 100, page 154. Willard's letter said that Lydia was born in France, however, the Ashtabula branch maintains that she was Canadian. She was probably French Canadian.
[4] According to Willard, William stayed in Elmira, NY and Byanca was the only child he could remember.
[5] Taken from headstone, Olin family cemetery, Austin, Mecosta Cty, MI.
[6] Information on Giles and Lydia was found in the Mecosta County History, page 251. In this item their marriage date is given as Feb. 2, 1856, obviously a typo.
[7] According to the 1880 Michigan Census, John had a servant, John helpher age 21.
[8] Mecosta county records show a marriage certificate for Alfred Olin, son of John C. and Sarah J. Basset. This may have beena second marriage for Sarah as Basset is definitely her maiden name.
[9] Death certificate shows his father as being William Henry Olin born in New York, there is a probate record at Mecosta Cty, MI.
