FAYETTE MARTIN FAMILY

Fayette Martin was the son of Edward Martin and Chloe Hopkins. He was born on March 14, 1843 in Parrish, Oswego County, New York and died on June 18, 1925 in Amboy, Illinois at the home of his daughter, Marcia. His obituary says that he was one of Portland's (Illinois) oldest residents. He was a veteran of the Civil War and a private in Co. B 147th Ill Cavalry, company of Captain George H. Fay.

Fayette married three times, his first time on December 29, 1875 to Sarah Dove(y) Martin in Whiteside County, Illinois. Sarah was born January 26, 1854 in Portland, Whiteside County, Illinois and she died February 8, 1879 and is buried in Sharon, Henry County, Illinois though she most likely died in Spring Hill. She apparently died just days after giving birth to their second child. Their children:

George Edward Martin born December 6, 1876 at Spring Hill, Whiteside County, Illinois. He married August 10, 1897 in Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois to Effie Clapper. They had Carl, Lloyd and Nellie Martin. They lived in Racine, Wisconsin.

Maurice Clyde Martin born February 4, 1879 at Spring Hill, Whiteside County, Illinois. He married Sadie Lamphere June 22, 1898 at Morrison, Whiteside County, Illinois. They had Vera, Bess, Cliff and Leroy Martin. They lived in Sterling, Whiteside County, Illinois.

Fayette took for his second wife my ancestor, Lydia J. Bolen Clifton. She was born May 2, 1848 in Sharon, Henry County, Illinois and they married on March 18, 1880 in Sharon. She died December 8, 1899 at Sharon. His occupation at that time was farmer. This was also Lydia's second marriage for her and she had five children from her marriage to Elias Clifton: Gertrude, Clarissa, Thomas, Pearl and Myrtle Clifton. Thomas died in 1896 of tuberculosis. The 1880 census does not show all of these children living with Fayette and Lydia only Thomas and Myrtle. Apparently, Myrtle was the only one to survive of the Clifton children.

Fayette and Lydia had two children:

Bessie Ella Martin born January 4, 1881 at Sharon, married September 3, 1898 at Morrison, Whiteside, Illinois to Wallie Bennett and died August 17, 1951 at Wessington Springs, South Dakota. (See pictures below) They had the following children:

Myrtle Bennett born September 28, 1899 at Prophetstown, Whiteside County, Illinois married July 31, 1923 in Huron, South Dakota to Glen Eddy. She died February 4, 1981 at Wessington Springs, South Dakota. They had two children: Joyce and Dihl Eddy.

Fay Edwin Bennett born February 18, 1901 at Erie, Illinois married September 14, 1923 at Huron, SD to Edna Kellogg. Fay died April 7, 1973 at Wessington Springs. They had two children: Russell and Jerry Bennett.

Ruby Irene Bennett was born April 4, 1905 at Gary, Illinois and married June 4, 1924 at Huron, SD to Herschel Litherland. She died January 12, 1982 at Wessington Springs. They had two children: Dorcas and Bennett Litherland.

Genevieve D. Bennett was born December 26, 1914 at Wessington Springs and married September 3, 1938 to William H. Tupper at Wessington Springs. They had two children: Laura and Wayne Tupper.

Marcia Chloe Martin born January 7, 1890 in Prophetstown, Whiteside County, Illinois, married Arthur Glass on September 12, 1906 in Clinton, Illinois. She died July 20, 1957 in Rock Falls, Whiteside County, Illinois.

Fayette took for his third wife, Catherine Clapper (Curtis?) (family oral history says Kate Curtis Kelly) on April 10, 1901. She had children from a previous marriage and is buried beside her first husband. She as a sister to Effie Clapper Martin and had resided in Clinton, IA. It is assumed that is where her children lived. Evidently she died before he as his daughter Marcia Chloe Martin Glass took care of him until his death on June 18, 1925 in Amboy, Illinois.

I am not sure why Morris (Maurice) was listed as a step-son as he was Fayette's son by Sarah Dovey. He was Lydia's step-son and perhaps she was giving the information to the census taker.
