Probate record for a Jedediah Ellis(1) who died in 1804 in Worcester County, Massachusetts. In the will it mentions his sons, Samuel, Smith, Jedediah(2) and Silas, also daughters. Some custody papers were filed for the son, Jedediah(2) age 14 (Perhaps his mother had died in 1807?). Oliver Hooker was given guardianship on March 25, 1807 (note the name Oliver was given to one of Jedediah's(1) sons.) However, in a paper dated September 1, 1807, Jedediah(2) requested that his custody be granted to Capt. Comfort Freeman and on September 4, 1807 permission was granted.

Worcester city directory about 1850 is Jedediah Ellis, miller. Other Ellis's listed were Charles S., George, Nathan B. and Sylvester. (Jedediah named one of his sons Charles.)

In the history of Southbridge, Massachusetts, Jedediah, Smith, Samuel and Silas are mentioned frequently. Samuel Ellis is listed as one of the first members as well as Abigail Smith Ellis (wife of Capt. Samuel Ellis). Comfort Freeman is also listed as one of those along with Silas and Smith who helped to organize the new church. In 1800, Jedediah Ellis was one of those who petitioned the house of Representatives for a parish or precinct. He was shown to have 492 acres worth $3,387. Comfort Freeman is also listed. Jedediah purchased two pews at the church. Jedediah and Capt. Samuel Ellis were both on a committee to ascertain the bounds of the town of Southbridge.

As for Sturbridge, Ellis is listed as a prominent name there also. A dam was erected in Westville on the Quinebaug river by Jedediah Ellis and Fletcher Foster in 1799. This became the site of the Sturbridge Manufacturing Company and an association was incorporated on the 5th of December 1811 with Comfort Freeman listed as the holder of 2 shares at $500. Samuel Ellis was a selectman who was chosen to represent the town of Sturbridge when they made their decision to not purchase any goods imported from England. This was in conformity to the late Non-Importation act. The first division of lands by the founders of Sturbridge was on the 9th of July, 1730. Samuel Ellis drew lots 49 West and 16 East. A David Ellis drew lots 1 West and 54 East.

The most interesting bit of information is from the town of Sturbridge. It seems that on June 13, 1728 a petition was put before the House of Representatives requesting 10,000 acres be set aside for a sufficient township (Sturbridge). One of the petitioners is a Josiah Ellis. Could this be Capt. Samuel Ellis's father? There is mention of many other familiar names such as Ammidown, Freeman, Gleason, Dresser, Smith and Hooker.

The same families are listed in the Woodstock, CT/MA records, Oxford, MA records and Sturbridge, MA records.

From Genealogies of Woodstock Families:

Betsey Young of Woodstock m. Sturbridge, Mass., Feb. 11, 1808 Samuel Ellis, perhaps b. Charlton June 2, 1776, son of Jedidiah Ellis and Martha Freeman.

Young Jedediah was supposedly 14 at his father's death, though it would seem that he was 16, his brother Silas and two sisters Dorithy and Lucretia were younger still. Were they split up? Or did Oliver Hooker get custody of all and only Jedediah filed for a change?

I would like more information on Martha Freeman. Edmund Freeman's daughter was Elizabeth and she married Lt. John Ellis of Sandwich, MA. That's a different line but you can't help but wonder?
