The Ancestry and Descendants of
Amos Ellis of New Salem, MA 1780-1856

 

This is the direct line descent from Thomas to Amos:

Thomas and Mary Wight (daughter of Thomas and Alice Wight) came to Medfield from Dedham in the end of 1651 or the beginning of 1652. They were married May 21, 1657, in Medfield. They had three boys and six girls, however the book gives a direct line descent:

Samuel Ellis, son of Thomas and Mary, was born November 9, 1664, in Medfield, and died there on November 9, 1712. He married Deborah Lovell, daughter of Alexander and Lydia (Leland) Lvell, but where and when are not known. Deborah, was born in Medfield on Decmber 20, 1675, and died there on June 15, 1740. They had four boys and five girls.

Timothy Ellis, son of Samuel and Deborah, was born August 9, 1704, in Medfield, and died September 6, 1736, in Medway, Mass. He married Hannah Adams on January 1, 1730-1, in Medway. Hannah was born March 29, 1707, in Medfield, daughter of John and Susanna (Breck) Adams, and died in Medway on July 1, 1756. They hadone boy and three girls.

Timothy Ellis, son of Timothy and Hannah, was born June 4, 1735 in West Medway, Mass ., and died January 29, 1798, in Medway. He married, first, Sarah Harding, daughter of Isaac and Rachel (Hill) Harding, on may 17, 1759, in Medway. Sarah was born in Medway on June 12, 1734, and died there on March 31, 1788. They had five boys and two girls. Timothy married, second, Mrs. Susanna Paine, on February 11, 1790, in Foxborough, Mass. Nothing further is known of her.

Paul Ellis, son of Timothy and Sarah, was born on October 12, 1758, in Medway, and died on December 18, 1826, in New Salem, Mass. He married, first, Mary Clar, daughter of Asa and Betty (Barstow) Clark, on May 26, 1779, in Medway. Mary was born in Medway on October 22, 1761, and died on January 22, 1786, but where is not known. They had two boys and a girl. Paul married, second, Rebeckah Homer, on April 5, 1786, in Royalston, Mass. The names of her parents are not known, but she was born on March 5, 1763, in Stoneham, Mass., and died on December 4, 1843, in New Salem, Mass. They had two infants who died at birth, one girl and nine boys.

Amos Ellis, son of Paul and Mary, was born on January 3, 1780, in Medway, and died on March 11, 1856, in New Salem. He married Lydia Phillips, daughter of Jedidiah and Sarah (Bullen) Phillips, on April 29, 1804, in Medway. She was born on June 3, 1781, in Medway, and died there on July71857. They had eight sons, Elihu, Clark, Horace, Chester, Jonathan Adams, Sylvester, Edward Hammond, and Amos, each of whom will be discussed in turn.
