The Amidown Family
This information is taken from "The Records of Oxford" page
527-530 (Massachusetts). I did type out the pages, if you'd like to view
them click here.
I am not entirely certain, because of the strange layout of the text, but
I believe that Philip Amidown, a descendant of Roger Amidown, who came from
Mendon to Oxford
in 1717 may have been the father or grandfather of our Jeremiah. Philip was
a gentleman of good estate and was much esteemed and interested in public
affairs.
According to the Oxford book, the early records show that Philip and his
wife, Ithama had a daughter, Hannah born February 2, 1718. There are other
Amidowns
mentioned but the dates are confusing and no link is made between them. (See
new information below)
Jeremiah Amidown married Elizabeth Martin of Douglas, February 1769. Jeremiah
died May 31, 1812 and his wife, Elizabeth died October 10, 1826. Children
of Jeremiah and Elizabeth were:
Mary Bathsheba Amidown
Elizabeth Amidown
Lucy Amidown b. 5 December 1769 in Oxford married Lemuel Moffitt
Isaac Amidown
Mary Amidown born August 29, 1773 married Elihu Harwood April 1795. (I
would assume that Mary Bathsheba died in infancy? This Mary is also called
Molly). Elihu was of Sutton and they had one child: Elihu Harwood. Elihu,
Sr.'s ancestors
were from Salem, MA, some of whom had become land proprietors in Sutton
on it's first settlement.
Lois Amidown
Sarah Amidown
Jeremiah Amidown born March 31, 1779 removed to Charlton, married Abigail
Harwood on October 7, 1801.
Samuel Amidown married Lucy Humphrey on August 28, 1809
Lurania Amidown born February 1786 married Lyman Wetherell April 26, 1807.
Lyman was born in Dudley (see Dudley Records). The family trace their ancestry
to Rev.
William Wetherell of Scituate, who was established there as a clergyman
in 1658 and died in 1684.
